The Importance of LOLER Examinations
Do your Overhead Cranes, Hoists and Lifting Equipment require an annual or 6 monthly LOLER examination? & Do you know what or why these examinations are required?
All lifting equipment and accessories fall under several sets of UK health & safety law. It’s not just “good practice” to get them checked, it’s a legal requirement.
Here’s why:
LOLER 1998 – Employers must have them inspected by a competent person at suitable intervals, and they must be kept in safe working order.
Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 – the duty of care to protect employees and anyone else affected by unsafe equipment.
Management Regulations 1999 – requires planned arrangements for inspections, servicing and ongoing monitoring.
Put simply:
LOLER examination = independent check that your Lifting Equipment is legally compliant and safe.
Annual service = preventative maintenance to keep it reliable and extend its life.
Both are essential, one keeps you compliant, the other keeps you operational.
Question for you: when was the last time your Lifting Equipment had both?
If you’re unsure when your Overhead Cranes, Hoists, Slings, Chains or any other items used for Lifting were last examined and serviced please get in touch.
